Bedspace supports and accommodates vulnerable people on behalf of the local authorities in numerous locations across the North West.

Since its formation in 1999, Bedspace has accommodated and supported over 7000 vulnerable people in a variety of local communities. Their focus is on providing leading-edge care solutions in safe, secure, good quality housing. Bedspace has successfully developed working partnerships with institutions that include: the Home Office, Refugee Action, County and City Councils, Social Services, Youth Offending Services, Leaving Care and Supported Living organisations. They have 4 offices located in Preston, Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds.

Although they had a wealth of experience in other areas, as a team, the senior staff at Bedspace found themselves with very little HR knowledge. As the organisation grew they needed to inject a large amount of professionalism into their operation and looked around for some external support and expertise. Recommended by the Business Link North West, Sue was called in to meet the team at Bedspace and quickly got to work.

Due to the nature of the business, Bedspace employ a large number of people who all have very different hours, resulting in a large number of complex contracts. Part of Sue's role is to rationalise and make sense of these contracts and ensure that employers and employees are looked after and protected. She is also responsible for promoting the staff voice within the organisation and encouraging staff engagement at all levels. In recent years, she has helped the business to undergo 3 restructures in order to operate more efficiently, as well as managing dismissals and compromise agreements, meeting recruitment requirements and organising redeployment.

Sue has been instrumental in the ongoing success of the business and the team regularly go to her for advice and support on all HR matters and issues. Her honesty, transparency and 'upfront' nature has resulted in a flexible and valuable relationship, empowering the team to make the right decisions for their staff and for the organisation as a whole.

Sue's input has allowed the organisation to put all staff on full time contracts and enabled them to adjust hours according to demand. Her sensible approach to restructuring and cost reduction has resulted in solutions that work in favour of the staff so that the company has been able to retain jobs and maintain a happy, motivated and effective workforce.

Sue has been integral to Bedspace's current success and has formed a strong bond with the current Directors - so much so she was asked to sit on to the board and we're delighted to say she has accepted. I/we look forward to working with Sue even more closely over the coming years.
